Why 4th of July is So Special to Me
While the 4th signifies a holiday where people are excited to have a day off from work, and it usually means BBQs, beers and a lot of pool time, to me the 4th of July means something different. One of my favorite things to do every single 4th of July is to do a cheesy (very mushy gushy post) about how the 4th means so much to me.
The holiday signifies a chance for a new life. It's truly my celebration in the pursuit of the life I want for myself. The life my parents gave me when they made the decision to flee Bosnia due to genocide in the early 90s. In case you didn't know, I was born in Bosnia 🇧🇦 during genocide and war in the early 90s. We fled our home country and found asylum here in the US. I recognize and understand how special it is that my parents and I were able to come to the US.
I am so so grateful to have become an American (I still remember the day my dad took my vow and swore on my behalf for citizenship because i was so young) and I am thankful for everything I have learned, achieved, and worked hard for over the years.
Just because the 4th of July is a celebration of independence, doesn't mean I personally don't celebrate every single day. My life would be COMPLETELY different if I hadn't come to the US, if I hadn't done everything I've done up until this point.
