I just got back from a trip to the midwest. We landed in Kansas City Missouri, and made our way into Kansas for a week long roadtrip through the state.
If you follow along on Instagram, you may have seen most of these photos already, but I thought I’d dive into a bit more detail about each leg of our trip. Quick side note. As I was packing Sunday night, I filmed a vlog including my tips for how I pack. A few years ago I’d need two suitcases for a week, but I got everything in one small black suitcase + my everyday backpack. Score!
Our first evening, we were in Overland Park for meetings and after the meeting ended, we went over to Louie’s Wine Dive. It had a great vibe, and the wines were written on a chalkboard (and you know how much I love chalkboards!) Sadly I didn’t get any photos here because I was really engaged in conversation and enjoyed the atmosphere and company.
On Tuesday, we made our way to Kansas City Kansas, and we had lunch during our meeting. It’s always tough doing a lunch meeting when you’re the one doing most of the talking, but I did totally fine with multi-tasking.
For dinner, we made our way to Lawrence Kansas (home of Kansas University) where we had the pleasure of eating at Bon Bon. You’ll have to check out their site because the creation of this restaurant is super cute, and comes from the owners’ love story. We were there on Valentine’s Day with our client, and they were projecting hearts on the wall which was very cute. They specialize in salad bowls, and we all ordered our own. It was delicious and the cocktails were divine.
We scrolled through Bon Bon’s Instagram, and found a cocktail with cotton candy sitting out. It’s called the booming efflock and I had to try it. It has buffalo trace, carpano antica, aztec chocolate bitters, black currant jam and Moonfluf Himalayan Sea Salt Caramel cotton candy. This (pictured above) was simply delicious. It wasn’t too sweet, but really helped to offset the bitterness of the buffalo trace. Highly recommend this bad boy!
My second cocktail was best intention, which had peaty scotch, gin, elderflower, lemon, egg white, bee pollen. I’ve never had a cocktail with egg white, but everyone at the table said I wouldn’t be able to taste egg and it would be shaken and stirred into the drink. This was true, and the cocktail was delicious, but the first one was just incredible.
The next day we made our way to Topeka, which is where we stayed for a couple of days. The first evening we went to Tuptim Thai which was such a great spot. The food was incredibly good, and the portions were generous. I’m a big advocate for service, and the service was incredible. The waiters came by as our waters were emptied, and it was a pleasant vibe.
Now, our final evening in Topeka was Thursday. We had the incredible pleasure of going to the Rowhouse Restaurant. It’s only open Wednesday-Saturday and seats a small amount of people so it’s definitely a more exclusive restaurant in Topeka. This was right up my alley, and Kelly (colleague/best friend) choose this one from a list the client offered us, and when I took a look it was a no brainer. This was one of the coolest places I have ever visited, and it’s in a house. The restaurant is set up upstairs and downstairs, and is such a unique experience with service unlike any I’ve ever seen before. We had 4+ people come and bring our meals, everything being explained thoroughly to us and the menu is set and changes constantly. The week we ventured in each person’s plate was $45 but it included 5+ courses (and you get a bit of each entree.) Since I’m not a scallop lover, I got twice the tenderloin which was heaven on earth for me. I love steak, and I love beef (see below.) Apologies to my vegetarian friends and vegan friends!
We have a fabulous time, and I did take photos of each course, but I didn’t use flash inside (I didn’t want to be intrusive to my colleagues and our guests) so the photos came out quite dark, and I prefer not to give you photo quality that does not align with my blog standards. I’m sure you understand 😉
All I have to say is this was one of the most memorable experiences, between our amazing company, the food, drinks and service. I cannot recommend Rowhouse enough. If you’re in the Kansas City area, you must make the drive to Topeka, stay the night and eat Rowhouse. You won’t regret it!
After our dinner at Rowhouse, and a few cocktails, I definitely need the perfect pick me up the next morning. Friday had an abrupt start as I had to shower, pack my belongings and pick up some coffee to take to our morning meeting. PT’s at College Hill was such a cool experience, and they are known for their coffee art. You know I adore coffee art (yes I’m one of those.) + I love cappuccinos. I’ve never found a coffee shop that does the art in cappuccinos. Normally they say it’s only for lattes, so this coffee shop is better than the rest 😉
So in a nutshell, this was my week. What a fabulous week in Kansas.
